Bwacha Should Stop Playing Politics with Security and Show Tarabans His Blueprint

Since the tragic killings in Binnari, Karim Lamido Local Government Area, last weekend, PDP governorship candidate Emmanuel Bwacha has intensified his efforts to discredit Governor Agbu Kefas’s security record. While casting aspersions on the government’s handling of security, Bwacha has yet to present Tarabans with a clear and credible blueprint for addressing the state’s security challenges.

In a video released following the incident, Bwacha expressed concern about the security of lives and property in Taraba State. While condolences to grieving families are both appropriate and necessary, exploiting a tragedy for political advantage is unhelpful. At a time when affected communities need solidarity and decisive action, Tarabans deserve practical solutions rather than political grandstanding.

The central question remains: What exactly is Bwacha’s plan for securing Taraba State?

Governor Kefas’s record cannot be dismissed through political rhetoric alone. Since assuming office, his administration has prioritised security through collaboration with military formations, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders, alongside investments in operational equipment, logistical support and personnel morale.

It is important to acknowledge that the recent killings are a painful reminder that significant challenges remain. However, no government anywhere can guarantee absolute security. What matters is the willingness to confront threats, strengthen security institutions and respond decisively to emerging dangers.

During the 2023 governorship campaign, Kefas identified the protection of lives and property as his foremost priority. His military background has informed his approach, particularly his emphasis on collaboration with security agencies and strengthening institutional partnerships.

Taraba’s geographical realities also demand a comprehensive strategy. Sharing borders with several Nigerian states and the Republic of Cameroon, the state faces complex security dynamics that require effective intelligence gathering, early-warning systems, community engagement and cross-border cooperation.

As the campaign progresses, Bwacha must explain how he intends to address these challenges. What measures would he introduce to prevent attacks on vulnerable communities? How would he strengthen intelligence gathering and improve the operational capacity of security agencies? What investments would he make, and how would he measure the effectiveness of his proposed interventions?

These are the questions Tarabans deserve answers to. Criticising an incumbent is a legitimate part of democratic politics, but criticism without a credible alternative offers little reassurance to citizens concerned about their safety.

The opposition also has a responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the debate. Rather than merely questioning the government’s performance, Bwacha should present a detailed, realistic and actionable security blueprint that allows Tarabans to assess his preparedness for leadership.

Bwacha should stop playing politics with security and show Tarabans his blueprint. The people deserve more than accusations and political theatrics; they deserve credible plans, accountable leadership and sustained action to protect their lives and property.
