The candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has described the 2027 election as a contest against “thieves”, accusing those in power of stealing the election and the country’s economy.

“We are competing with thieves. They stole the election. Now they have stolen the economy. They have stolen everything,” Atiku said in a video shared on his X account.

The former vice president also reaffirmed his commitment to restoring fuel subsidy if elected president, saying his position had not changed despite comments attributed to one of his aides.

He argued that subsidy removal had pushed more Nigerians into poverty, stressing that the government’s responsibility was to protect the welfare of citizens.

Atiku said Nigeria was rich enough to provide relief for its people and pledged to improve both economic and physical security if elected.

In the statement accompanying the video, he said his administration would restore a targeted subsidy, reduce energy and transportation costs and boost Nigerians’ purchasing power.

He added that rising fuel prices had increased transport and food costs, placing greater pressure on households. Atiku said he would support local production, help businesses grow and make wages more valuable for Nigerians.
